Checkups & Cleans
Regular dental checks and cleans are vital in maintaining a healthy mouth.
At Queen Street Dental, checkups are not just for teeth but instead for the whole mouth for the purpose of detecting diseases such as joint problems (temporomandibular joint disorders), bacterial, viral, and fungal infections as well as any abnormal growths. It is during this appointment we can advise on a long term preventative management plan and detect any emerging areas of concern so that they may be addressed before they become more serious.
Routine checks are recommended every 6 months however depending on your individual circumstances we may recommend anything between every 3-12 months
Professional scale and cleans are vital to the health of your gums. Although you may brush and floss your teeth regularly, over time plaque accumulates and can calcify due to the minerals in your saliva, this forms ‘calculus’ or ‘tar-tar’ resulting in inflammation of the gums (gingivitis).
Orthodontic retainers and other appliances, as in the image below, make it even more difficult to thoroughly clean between teeth and under the wire.
If left for long periods of time, gum infection and bone loss (periodontitis) can occur resulting in a loss of support for your teeth. Common symptoms include bleeding after brushing or flossing, bad breath (halitosis), "long teeth", sensitivity, and eventually loose teeth.
A professional clean removes all of this build up to encourage healthy gums; we use a small tip that vibrates rapidly to help breakup the calculus. It is usually recommended to have regular cleans every 3-6 months but may vary depending on your needs.

Fissures are the pits and grooves that develop in teeth, they differ from peroson to person in shape, size and depth.
Fissure sealants are a preventative treatment designed to flow resin (white filling material) into the deep pits and grooves that are otherwise very difficult to clean and therefore prone to decay.
